"Games" by Steven Johnson

The article "Games" by Steven Johnson talks about how video games and books. Johnson argues that video games can be good and bad for children because it may promote eye-hand coordination in children, and video games can also promote aggression and violent responses to conflict. Johnson also brought up McLuhan’s observation about "the problem with judging new cultural systems on their own terms is that the presence of the recent past inevitably colors your vision of the emerging form, highlighting the flaws and imperfections"(Johnson, 2011). In this generation more and more gadgets are coming out that distracts children and takes most of their time. But if we all think about it most parents thinks that all new things are bad for children weather its a type of gadget or a type of clothing style. Johnson mentioned a thought experiment where video games were invented before books; what would parents, teachers and cultural authorities would say about reading? In my opinion Steven Johnson article has a very valid point on how most people judge newly invented objects. I also think that if video games were invented before book everyone will say that books are not good for children because books isolates children from the outside world and it prevents kids to socialize with other people. Books require its reader's full attention to engage with the reading. I personally think that we should balance our time between reading and gaming. I honestly think that parents should let their kids play during the day and read before bedtime; Because having your reading skills in place will help us in the long run especially most employers hire people with a great reading skills.
